This is a contents page I roughly sketched out to go with the front cover of my prelim task. It has contents written at the top but is not very bold or makes it stand out. For my real title it will be brighter and funky. The contents of the magazine are listed with the page numbers next to them. It looks quick scruffy the way it is laid out and for my proper contents page i will make it much more neater and laid out so it can be understood better than this one. it also would have some pictures of featured things in the magazine down the side. this is something i will take foward and use in my proper magazine.

Feedback 26/3/09

A very good prelim task vicky - well done! Good research and analysis.
Now you need to scan and upload your mood boards and rough outlines of your pages/plan.

Preliminary Task - 16.03.09

I made the College magazine prelim. It included a title, date and price, picture of the main featured article and different articles within it.
I think the layout of the magazine was good with one main picture and article and other titles around it. I will use the idea of having a large picture centre of the magazine with smaller titles around it. Also the use of lots of pink and pastel colours is appropriate as my magazine is going to be designed for girls.

I think that there wasn't enough pictures or writing to it so it looked quite bland and when I make my proper magazine I think I need to make it look more interesting to make the reader want to buy my magazine.

I have learnt from this task how to use the different technology involved eg. Indesign and Photshop. This will now help me when I begin making my proper magazine.

A very good start Vicky - your target audience is well outlined!
You now need ot analyse a front cover, contents page and double page feature in relation to whether or not they follow the conventions of magazines (these are outlined in the PDF under practical projects on the AS Media Moodle site.) Who is the target audience for the magazine and how has it been put together to appeal to this audience?

Project Phoenix

I think that the group of music interest would be casuals where music plays a role in their life, but other things are more important. This group applies to 32% of 2,200 16-45 year old male and females. It would be said that the people in this group are equally, or more interested in the fashion and lifestyle of the music world than the music itself. The subgroup within this I think that my magazine would be aimed at is 'Weekend Rowdies'. Male and females in their mid teens to early twenties who live for the weekend.

Reader Profile

Reader Profile
Age? 16 to late twenties
Sex? Female
Occupation? College and university students
Hobbies? Clubbing, socialising, listening to music
Fashion? Interested in fashion, like going out and spending money
Socio-economic scale? D/E

Existing Magazines

M8 Mag is quite appealing on the front. The front cover is quite simple with the featured artist on the front. All the font colours tie into each other. It includes quite alot of information on the front cover but isn't that overpowering but could include less.
It doesn't include a free gift like the other two but at £3.50 it is cheaper than the others. The pricing of these magazines is something I need to consider, as the market is so competetive I need to be able to give my readers value for money.

Existing Magazines

Dj Mag is a magazine dedicated to Electronic Dance Music and Dj's. The front cover to this magazine is quite bright and would be appealing to potential readers. It contains plenty of information but is not as overpowering as Mix Mag. It contains a free CD and this is something I may consider doing this as most of these magazines offer a free gift.
I like the way this magazine is set out as it is simple but attractive. The magazine costs £3.95 but for what the magazine includes this is quite reasonable.

Existing Magazines

Mixmag is a British dance and clubbing magazine. It covers dance events, and reviews music and club nights. Mixmag carries a cover mix CD each month by a different DJ or artist.
The front cover has quite alot going on. It includes the name of the magazine, plus a large picture of the main artist being featured. It also contains different details of what is going to be in the magazine.
I don't like the style of this magazine as I think there is too much information on the front page and this may put people off buying.
The magazine costs £3.95 monthly but contains over 150 pages so the value is quite good.

Blog Entry 1 - Planning and Research 02/03/09

I am going to create a music magazine for my media coursework. I have chosen this over the film sequence as I think this would be more interesting and I find it easier to work on my own than with other people who may have different ideas.
The genre I have decided for my music magazine is dance. The target audience for my magazine will be teenage girls aged between sixteen to twenties. The magazine will be designed to suit girls rather than boys so will include girly themes and appeal to girls. I may need to carry out some research in order to find out exactly what girls may expect to see from the magazine. The unique selling point of my magazine is that it is created specifically for girls rather than male and female like most magazines. It is gender specific.
I think my product would be successful because it is different to most music magazines in the sense that it is aimed at older girls which is different to what the majority of music magazines aim at.

I will carry out audience questionnaires to make sure I am giving the potential readers what they want to see. This way I can avoid putting in things that the readers don't want to see and aren't interested in. I will also analyse different magazines of various genres to find out expected conventions of successful music magazines. I will conduct some research on products similar to my magazine to make sure I am making the best magazine possible.
